LENS Neurofeedback (EEG Biofeedback)
Chronic stress (such as from high burdens of unresolved trauma or neglect) and head injuries can alter the wiring of the brain. LENS Neurofeedback (also known as EEG Biofeedback) is a form of evidence based treatment whereby signals from the body and brain are measured electrically, and reflected ‘as is’ back to the site of measurement. Remarkably, the body and mind seem to recognize these signals and seems to be able to make a change in the neurophysiology as a response to this feedback. This typically will assist in reorganization of the neurology towards a higher level of function, and can be accompanied with a series of changes in emotional regulation, pain intensity, sleep, energy and concentration. The brain communicates internally via electrical impulses called brain waves which occur at different frequencies in the brain (these are measured via EEG). LENS Neurofeedback uses technology (a computerized system) to “speak” directly to the body and mind. This communication is similar to holding a mirror up to the brain and allowing it to “see itself”. Once the brain is presented with this new information it will make necessary changes using what is referred to as neural plasticity. LENS works to lift suppression in the brain allowing the brain to be more flexible and function more optimally. The energy signal that LENS transmits to the body or brain is weaker than a cell phone signal. The treatment can help clear negative inner dialogue and widen perspective, allowing the individual to clear some blocks to recovery and progress further in their journey.
While LENS is not a cure-all, we have found it to be helpful in supporting the recovery for some of those who have struggled to make headway with other modalities, as part of a holistic biopsychosocialspiritual treatment plan. Additional information can be found on this below.
